Today the Gospel is told from two different points of view. First we hear from the wedding guest and then we hear from the host who gives the feast. Luke in his Gospel likes to make contrasts. Jesus invites us to look at things from the opposite point of view. If you are the host and not the guest how would you behave? If you invite friends, relatives or rich neighbours they might invite you back so your good deed will be cancelled out. The suggestion is that we invite people with no chance of repaying the complement out of pure generosity. Today many would consider doing this unusual. Every Sunday we are invited to ‘The Table of the Lord’, the banquet of the Eucharist at which no one has an honoured place above anyone else.
