CANONISATION OF JOHN HENRY NEWMAN Sun 13th Oct. J H Newman 1801-1890. He was the Vicar of the C of E University Church but after his retirement from Littlemore, Oxford he was received into the Catholic Church by Blessed Dominic Barberi on 9th Oct 1845. Ordained a priest in Rome he became the Rector of the Catholic University in Ireland & founded the Oratory school in Birmingham. In 1879 he was made a Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. Praised for his unstinting care of souls, humility and prayerful contact with the invisible world. He died in Birmingham in 11th August 1890.
