Message from Bishop of Porthsmouth

Dear Faithful and Clergy of the Diocese of Portsmouth,

“I watched Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Yes, I have given you power to tread underfoot serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of the enemy; nothing shall ever hurt you” (Luke 10: 18-19).

What we do know is that He has given us victory through the death and resurrection of His Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ and poured into human history the power of the Holy Spirit to guide all things in the right direction. This is why, in the words of St. Paul... read more

St James Catholic church

St James Church is built within the ruins of the great Benedictine Abbey. Today we continue the practice of the monks to celebrate the Sacred Liturgy in Word and Sacrament. The church was built between 1837 and 1840, the architect was A W Pugin. On 14th December 2012 the community celebrated a Mass of Thanks giving on the 175th Anniversary of the Laying of the Foundation Stone and completion of the recent restoration work in the church.
